Big Moon Rising
On the night of this Saturday, Jan. 10, the Moon will be at its biggest and brightest for the whole year of 2009. This is known as a "perigee moon", and occurs because the moon's orbit around the Earth is elliptical. This elliptical orbit brings it closer to and further from the Earth, and this weekend it will be at its closest point to Earth (perigee). Because the moon is actually closer, it will look a bit bigger and brighter in our sky than usual. If it's clear, try to get outside and see it!
